A paper to accompany Peter Phippen’s Abbeyfield Lecture given on 17 June 2000. People are living longer in current times than ever before, and this trend is set to continue. It is important to recognise that this is a worldwide phenomenon affecting all countries. The drive for better healthcare has been coupled with the Government’s new approach to healthier living, encouraging all forms of healthy living. However the incidence of dementia continues to increase this has lead people to consider that houses have to be built to be adaptable and respond to changing requirements, not least those of the ageing.
