Design Guide for the development of new build accommodation for older people

2001

Abstract

Abbeyfield societies have traditionally provided accommodation and services for older people in either a sheltered housing or registered care home model, albeit in a variety of ways. The future models of housing and care provided by Abbeyfield will need to be different from today’s if they are to accommodate these trends, comply with new legislation and continue to provide what older people want and need. To avoid problems in the future a more flexible approach is essential. Crucially this flexibility must be considered in the design and construction of buildings to allow future adaptations to be made that will be able to accommodate changes in policy and in the physical abilities of the residents.
