Norton Canes Health Centre, Staffordshire

Client: United Healthcare Developments
Role: Architecture and Landscape Architecture
Value: £1.8 million

Norton Canes Health Centre not only positively responds to the spatial requirements requested by South Staffordshire PCT, but also the challenge posed by twenty existing residential properties which back onto the site.

The design of the new health centre has been carefully massed and orientated to ensure that the impact of the new building on their lives can be minimised, without compromising the various clinical operations that the new building must deliver. This has been achieved by carefully clustering the accommodation to face onto internal landscaped courtyards whilst still allowing the new building to be naturally lit and ventilated.

Three existing GP practices have been accommodated within their own purpose designed wings, ensuring that each of the practices can maintain their own identity and methods of working. However whilst each wing can be operated independently, all are connected by a generous and visually stimulating series of public spaces enabling the centre to be operated just as successfully as a single practice in the future.
