Sainsbury’s, Coulsdon, London

Client: Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd
Role: Architecture and Environmental Services

A hybrid solution of biomass heating for the retail element and photo-voltaics for the residential element creates a highly sustainable solution that benefits both residents and retailer.

A short-listed HDA project, the 30,000 sq ft supermarket occupies the entire ground floor of the development. Despite the significant volume of retail space which is serviced by four levels of car parking above, the design has maximised the residential elements to achieve a high proportion of family housing. Residential accommodation is provided on the southern front, with further residential provided in the form of townhouses on the roof with integrated amenity space.

The blind mixed tenure design provides generous useable balconies and private terraces as well as access to the roof top garden which is shared by all the residents and includes a secure play area for children under five.

The scheme’s energy strategy aims to achieve 10% onsite renewable energy generation.
