Client: Renaissance Consortia on behalf of Manchester City Council
Role: Architects, Housing PFI / Urban Regeneration
PRP was initially appointed by the Renaissance Consortium (comprising Lovell, Adactus HA and the Mill Group) as one of two teams bidding to be awarded a housing led PFI project to regenerate Miles Platting, an area covering over 100 hectares situated 1 mile immediately to the east of Manchester city centre.
Miles Platting remains an area with a very high proportion of council owned properties and has been in decline for many years. It's population has over time contracted significantly, placing extra demands on local schools and services. The land clearance that has followed has further fragmented the remaining communities.
PRP produced a masterplan to reverse this decline by identifying 300 of the 1900 homes currently owned by the City Council for demolition in order to create a series of development opportunities across the neighbourhood into which over 1000 new homes for outright sale will be introduced. In addition the masterplan makes allowance for a new neighbourhood centre and offices to house local services, including a new swimming pool and a range of retail spaces.
One of the main design features of the scheme was to work with the existing landscape and industrial heritage features including the Rochdale Canal , along which a linear park is being created providing safe and convenient pedestrian links into New Islington and the city centre beyond.
