Client: The British Museum Company
Role: Retail Interior Design
The life of The British Museum has evolved; responding to and competing with other developing commercial businesses.
The retail element of the British Museum generates a significant proportion of its £9m turnover and forms an integral part of the visitor experience. PRP has designed a series of retail projects within the Museum to respond to the organisation and planning changes of staging an exhibition in the temporary gallery space – within the Reading Room in the Great Court. The retail space layout has been modified to create entrance and exit routes for the 400 person footfall per hour, booked for this exhibition.
A major part of this project was the re-planning and refurbishment of the bookshop which now functions as the exit shop for the exhibition, whilst still retaining its importance as the destination bookshop for the Museum.
