St Mary's House, Salisbury College

Client: Beacon Housing Association

Role: Architecture

St Mary's House breathes new life into the historic Salisbury College campus in this important location on the eastern fringe of the city centre.

St Mary's House is a new residential expansion of Salisbury College which was built to accommodate an increasing number of undergraduate students.

The building, formed from a group of semi-derelict Victorian buildings adjacent to the main campus, provided the opportunity to develop 94 study bedrooms and a higher education centre. The study bedrooms are planned in groups of nine or ten, each equipped with its own communal kitchen and dining room area. The apartments easily link to neighbouring units and are fully accessible by lift and staircase. The higher education centre was remodelled from an attractive Victorian building to stand over three levels and provides a sheltered, private courtyard for student use. This successful development has given a new lease of life to a significant group of buildings and has created a landmark scheme for Salisbury College.
