PRP To Design Space For Contemplation

A planning application has been submitted by Soka Gakkai International – United Kingdom (SGI-UK), a lay organisation whose members practise the Buddhist teaching of Nichiren Daishonin, for a garden extension to an existing building in use as a culture centre and place of worship designed by PRP Architects.

The Maples is a Victorian detached house in Acton, west London. The planned extension to the rear of the building will provide a worship hall and glazed gallery with curved copper roofs, looking into a landscaped garden. Up to 120 people will be able to use the spaces at any time - to chant, study or plan events.

PRP Project Leader, David Housego, said of the design: “We have been sensitive to the future use of the building, and its garden outlook. By designing a lightweight structure of timber and glass the sense of light and space is maximised, and good views of the garden are provided to encourage contemplation and relaxation.”
