PRP Architects, the UK’s largest housing architect, has teamed up with Bill Dunster architects, an innovatory practice specialising in low-energy zero-carbon developments, to form a new joint venture, PRP zedfactor.

The practices will retain separate offices, but will select appropriate projects on which to collaborate. Bill Dunster architects will contribute its unique research and development approach, while PRP will bring unrivalled experience in the wider design of sustainable communities, together with the technical support and resources that large complex design projects demand.

PRP has been widely acclaimed for its work in both the private and public housing sectors, including major urban regeneration projects, masterplanning and sustainable design. Bill Dunster architects’ work is exemplified by its award-winning BedZED project near Croydon, a carbon-neutral housing development created with Peabody Housing Trust and opened this year.

The practices have already worked together on several projects, including a recent successful competition entry for sustainable mixed-use development at Jintan, China where the developer now wishes the practices to second staff to China to work on the project with local designers.

Collaboration responds to RIBA president’s call for joint working.

Zedfactor also responds to RIBA president Paul Hyett’s recent call for small and large practices to share their expertise to deliver best results for clients and the built environment.

‘We very much agree with Paul Hyett on this,’ said PRP director Andy von Bradsky. ‘Big and small practices have different strengths and partnerships often add up to more than the sum of their parts. PRP has immense respect for what Bill Dunster architects has achieved and we firmly believe that Bill’s imagination and technical rigour lead the field in environmentally-friendly design.’

He continued: ‘On PRP’s side, we have a depth of understanding of housing design and management that few practices can rival, and an enviable reputation for delivering results. The combination of PRP and Bill Dunster architects will bring tremendous benefits for clients and end users.‘

Bill Dunster commented: ‘We will be combining the best qualities of a small innovative practice with the experience, depth and resources of a large one. This will bring fresh ideas and skills to challenge many of the established practices working in the housing sector in the UK.’
