A partnership between PRP architects, John Laing Partnership and Green Horizons has been awarded planning permission for the final phase at the Barbot Estate development in Edmonton, providing 282 new homes.
The final phase, totalling £25.5m, will provide 44 houses and 64 flats of affordable housing through landlord Green Horizons Housing. The remaining 174 one-and-two bedroom flats are to be retained by John Laing Partnership and will be for private sale.
“Providing a range of housing tenures is the most successful model for creating sustainable communities and we are delighted to play a key part in this development,” said John Lee, architect at PRP, who designed the scheme.
A notable feature of the scheme is the provision of a green route throughout the masterplan and additional green space, including the retention of areas of mature trees. The available green space on the estate has been increased and now totals 2807sqm.
Security has also been a contributing factor in PRP’s design of the housing and landscaping, the blocks have been designed to effect a turning of the corners, bringing visual dynamism and increasing natural surveillance of the streets, pedestrian routes and parking.
The scheme forms the final phase of the Edmonton Partnership Initiative master plan, initiated by Edmonton Council in 1997 to redevelop the Edmonton and Edmonton Green area.
“This planning award marks a significant milestone in progressing this scheme to its final phases. We look forward to continuing our successful partnership approach, to deliver a high quality urban development in line with local community need,” said Stuart Miller, Business Development Director at John Laing Partnership Ltd.
Building work is scheduled to start autumn 2004, the affordable housing is due for completion in March 2006 and the private sale in June 07.
