Go-Ahead For £25.5M Centres of Excellence

Three new Centres of Excellence for older people, designed by PRP, have received support from Bath and North East Somerset councillors. The new complexes, totalling £25.5m, will replace the area’s seven existing care homes.

The centres will provide accommodation for all levels of dependence, ranging from independent flats with communal facilities to more specialist care for the very physically dependent. Day care centres on the sites will provide facilities for the older people in the local community, such as a restaurant and hydrotherapy treatments.

Anne-Marie Nicholson, associate at PRP said: “We are delighted by the support the scheme has achieved from the local councillors, the centres will provide quality services for all levels of dependency and be able to adapt as needs change in the future.”

The schemes have been developed through consultation and research. PRP’s design experience has shown that services for older people require a new approach in order to meet the increased demand of very physically dependent elderly people and those with dementia.

The project was commissioned by the Bath and North East Somerset Council, who will contribute approximately £18m to the scheme. Somer Community Housing Trust has recently joined forces with the council enabling the area available for the project to be extended.

The first phase of the scheme will be submitted for planning approval this summer.
