PRP, Britain’s largest housing architect, has gained planning consent for Denham Garden Village, Buckinghamshire which, with 326 homes and a variety of community facilities, probably will be the largest retirement village in the UK.
The first phase of the £60 million development is due for completion in January 2006 and will contain 118 homes.
“Our aim is to bring care to people – not people into care,” said Roger Battersby, Director at PRP. “We wanted to create a real village feel with emphasis on secure, continuing support that fosters independence.”
The homes will range from flats to bungalows and 2/3 bedroom two-storey retirement cottages and just under half of them will be affordable housing. The village is designed to suit active people aged 55 and over who will benefit from the range of exciting lifestyle opportunities alongside care services and assistive technology.
The village, owned and managed by Anchor Trust, will be supported by a range of village facilities including a restaurant, café-bar, leisure centre, village hall, winter garden and a shop.
Tony Tench, project manager for Denham Garden Village comments, “Denham Garden Village represents a new era for retirement living, with high quality facilities, services and accommodation that simply cannot be matched elsewhere.”
Not only the homes but the entire external environment is wheelchair accessible. All residents will be able to move around freely.
Approved by South Buckinghamshire District Council, the new development replaces the Licenced Victuallers National Homes development which comprised 183 bungalows and a nursing home.
