PRP’s designs for a massive regeneration of a key area of Hackney have been chosen by the London Borough of Hackney as part of their choice of partner for the comprehensive redevelopment of the Haggerston West and Kingsland estates in the borough.
The two estates will be transferred to housing association London and Quadrant if a tenant ballot is successful and, in consultation with local residents, the estates will be demolished to provide new homes and facilities. The redevelopments will double the density to create around 700 new mixed tenure homes. There will be at least 310 homes for rent via the housing association, with a further 70 homes for low cost home ownership. The remaining homes will be for outright sale.
The homes include spacious low-rise apartments and some family homes. The designs incorporate features to ensure that they are secure, environmentally friendly and have private amenity space. A green linear route will run the length of the neighbourhood and there are plans to build a new community centre and re-provide local shops. With some homes overlooking the Grand Union Canal, there is a focus around courtyards and green spaces.
Kim Hitch, architect at PRP said: ‘We wanted to create homes for 21st century city living within an external environment of traditional street patterns. They are designed to meet the aspirations of local residents for many years to come and aimed at creating a sustainable and thriving neighbourhood.’
Don Wood, Chief Executive of London & Quadrant Housing Trust added: “It is a joy to see inspiring plans for a new development that will not only create high quality new homes with real kerb appeal but should provide more amenities and plenty of open space for people. This is likely to become a neighbourhood where people want to live and enjoy their surroundings. I am very excited about this key regeneration project.”
