A £65m retirement village designed by leading architectural services practice PRP has received planning permission. The St Georges Park complex, which will be the largest of its kind in Europe, is situated in rural west Sussex and will provide 235 luxury apartments, three 60-bed nursing homes and extensive health, social and leisure facilities.

The development is situated in the grounds of St Georges Retreat in Ditching Common, a care a facility set up by the Augustinian Sisters over 100 years ago. 142 new homes will be built in clusters within the grounds and adjacent to existing historic buildings, including a convent and chapel, which date back to 1868.

“The design will produce a five-star modern development providing high quality homes and facilities for the elderly without compromising the beauty of the site,” said Heather McCulloch, project architect at PRP. “The buildings will incorporate traditional materials and detailing reflecting the rural location and local arts and crafts influences.”

The existing accommodation will be renovated and additional wings added to provide the remaining 93 flats. The complex is set in 250 acres of parkland and woodland which includes a lake, a farm and a Site of Nature Conservation Importance - home to rare species of orchids, newts, bats and birds.

The St Georges Park complex will provide a range of high quality facilities for residents including a swimming pool and spa centre, hairdressers, library and shops. A village courtyard with café and restaurant will form the centrepiece of the development where activity will extend outside in fine weather. The complex will also feature services such as a bakery delivering fresh bread to homes every morning.

The first phase of the project, the construction of 71 apartments, is due to commence early next year. 225 of the new homes will be for private sale, sales information can be obtained through the Augustinian Sisters on 01444 235 874.
