Government Efforts to accelerate the supply of new housing and to build sustainable communities have run up against a series of barriers, which have led to calls for a ‘step change’ and for a different business model. The reasons for the UK’s poor performance have been well-documented in national reports such as the Barker Review, and do not need to be repeated. What is not so clear is how to remove the barriers in ways that avoid cutting red tape lengthwise, and that will be politically acceptable!
