Competition

Client: Rok Eagle / Ordnance Survey

PRP architects submitted a proposal for this limited competition to consider the relocation of Ordnance Survey from their existing campus in Southampton to a new 6.37 hectare site just on the outskirts of the city adjoining the M271.

The brief was to provide Ordnance Survey and its employees with a Headquarter Building of 15,000sq.m that retains the company at the forefront of their core business of digital data products, paper maps for business, leisure, administrative and educational use. The proposals create a landmark building which combines a simple, rational and flexible layout with innovative design whilst providing low running costs, an excellent BREEAM rating and responding to the need for flexibility in floor space requirements for the future.

The proposal will enable Ordnance Survey to reach their aspirations of creating a stimulating working environment that increases productivity and enables open communication between members of staff from all departments. The concept also provides for future flexibility for the work force, changes in business and technology and the ability to sublet space.

The concept provides five interconnecting low-energy 1 and 2-storey pavilion buildings based on a 15m deep floor plate surrounding internal courtyards located within a landscaped park. All departments are connected by an internal street to the double height reception area which is at the heart of the building. The building is naturally ventilated all year round using the thermal mass to heat and cool. A CHP plant and green roofs are also used to minimise the building’s impact on the environment.
