Won in an architectural competition promoted by Crest Nicholson, PRP’s high-density residential scheme on a sensitive site in Poole, Dorset, isan exemplar of a well designed residential neighbourhood comprising private sale and affordable homes.
The scheme of 512 homes is designed around an existing curving street to form a traditional street frontage that varies in scale and provides activity in the public realm. Behind the crescent are a number of mews courts and streets that have a strong sense of enclosure and neighbourliness. The development is close to the town centre and has a distinctive urban character that takes its design cues from a contemporary architectural style, with buildings varying in scale from three to 10 storeys.
Sustainability issues have been a key design consideration leading to the introduction of a ‘car club’ for residents, 100% secure cycle parking and improved bus service. Care has also been taken to ensure that the private sale and affordable housing is dispersed throughout the site and is designed in such a manner to be visually indistinguishable from one another. 45 extra care sheltered flats for the elderly are planned to enhance the social spectrum of the new neighbourhood quarter.
The first phases were completed in December 2005.
