Denham Garden Village

Date: 2005

A flagship retirement village

Client: Anchor Trust

Denham Garden Village is a ‘flagship’ project for Anchor Trust; a retirement village for the over 55s promoting a full and active retirement regardless of age & state of health.

The strategy for this innovative and unique ‘life-style model’ was to provide a positive statement which would engender the birth of a lively community, by offering local facilities, meeting places, shared activities and freedom of choice, together with the security of ‘care at home’ if needed.

As part of our holistic approach to the village as a coherent whole, we provided a design strategy to inform all aspects of the interior. Continuity of lighting, materials & detailing through transition from residential street to public meeting spaces to more commercial / retail spaces was maintained. The village interior endeavoured to be true to the modern nature of the building, with clean lines, an emphasis on warm natural materials, textures and colour to provide interest, while references to the familiar domestic interior give comfort and security.

The facilities offered at Denham include a restaurant & bar, village hall, winter garden, local shop and health spa, with plans to provide a doctor’s surgery as part of the second phase of development.

The aspirational qualities of the village ideal have a direct relationship to the material quality of the building and its interiors. The desire to achieve a positive, enabling, environment is reflected in the quality of materials, lighting design, and sensitive treatment of the interrelationship of spaces.

The interior complies with relevant statutory requirements – lighting levels, facilities for wheelchair users, wayfinding and signage strategy for visual impairment, the provision of handrails – while making great efforts to avoid appearing institutional.

PRP provided a design identity which informed all areas of the project from signage through to the design of the Health Spa, & treatment of the Show House and Marketing Suites.

Phase 1 of this project including the village centre is now complete and is proving hugely successful.
