A Continuing Care Retirement Development

Client: The Cinema & Television Benevolent Fund

Glebelands House is a Grade ll Listed building on an 11 acre site close to Wokingham town centre. It is owned and run by the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund as a nursing home for those who have worked in the industry ‘behind the camera’. Like many care homes of its generation the accommodation had fallen behind current standards and was inefficient in terms of care delivery.

The brief to PRP was for the overall redevelopment of the site, including the upgrading of the existing facilities, to provide a range of accommodation for older people with varying needs in terms of support and care.

The setting of the original late 19 Century ‘Arts and Crafts’ house was of paramount importance in terms of new development on the site. After a protracted planning application process, permission was granted on early 2004 for the new Extra Care and Retirement Flats as well as for the remodeling and extension of the existing building to incorporate en-suite facilities for the nursing home bedrooms.

The design has been developed in a modern vernacular style that complements the existing house whilst not resorting to ‘pastiche’.

The project is to be developed in three phases in order to enable the existing residents to remain on the site. The first phase which comprised the Extra Care flats was completed in June 2006, the second phase which comprised the refurbishment and extension of the Grade II Listed building was completed October 2007.

PRP’s commission also included interior design, landscape architecture and contract adminsitration.
