High density & mixed use

Client: Quintessential Homes

An environmentally conscious solution, the celebration of high density living and a holistic view of the social activities/services needed for communities to thrive; Wembley Phase One (a.k.a. Wembley W-01) represents a revolutionary new approach to residential architecture and design.

PRP’s design seeks to deliver greater communal and social interaction for residents and commercial tenants - the block’s massing wraps around a communal landscaped courtyard which provides lots of space for family activities and socialising. The design of the block itself, with its three main sides, acts as a sound barrier against the noise from the streets and stadium, thus creating a calm and peaceful oasis in the centre of the courtyard. A break in continuity to the south of the building enables sunlight to flood the central space and apartments.

A key feature is the building’s roof - it appears to be formed from a flat metallic plane, which ‘folds down’ from the roof line to form part of the façade - a landmark feature that creates a double height entrance lobby at the northwest corner.

The building itself is clad using a mix of materials to provide texture, shape and contrast. Ample balconies, some of which have sliding glazed screens, provide additional character and interest.

Sensitivity to the environment lies at the heart of the building. Sustainable features including rainwater harvesting for watering plants, a Combined Heat and Power system for heating and hot water, special glazing, modern methods of construction and new waste systems have all been included in our design.

More importantly, community-based services including the landscaped courtyard, a crèche/day nursery, an employment portal, launderette, car club combined residential/business units and retail, have been created to support the services and needs of a thriving community.

On completion, W-01, the first mixed use block on Wembley’s site, will cover 24,000m² of residential space for 286 high quality residential apartments, 48% for mixed tenure affordable housing. The block also provides 300m² of retail and 1000m² of community space, with a basement car park for 132 cars and 286 secure bicycle storage spaces.
