Won in a limited competition, PRP’s mixed use, mixed tenure development in Lewisham for Bellway Homes, has received praise from the Commission for Architecture & the Built Environment (CABE), who were invited to participate in the selection panel process together with the London Borough of Lewisham Planners.
PRP’s proposals for Meridian South were inspired by the recommendations in the Urban Task Force’s Urban Renaissance, which seeks to regenerate our urban centres with high quality mixed use developments. Such developments are designed to encourage people to return to cities to live, work and spend their leisure time.
Located on the former 4.6 hectare Hither Green hospital site, the area’s magnificent retained Victorian water tower acts as both as a symbol with the past and as a landmark for the future. PRP’s design also retains several other 19th century buildings and mature trees from the area.
The creation of a new urban square lies right at the start of our design and is marked by the tower and groups of large trees. The high density scheme, varying in height from three to six storeys, has the non-housing uses located at ground level with accommodation for 440 homes above.
The scheme has received glowing praise from CABE who have identified it as an exemplar mixed use development.
