Specialist Housing

Client: Housing 21

Housing 21 were selected together with PRP by Suffolk County Council to provide a new sheltered housing scheme with extra care to address the shortfall in housing for frail older people in the Babergh District Council area.

The form of the scheme, which is sited on the edge of a village, is broken up to give the appearance of a cluster of smaller buildings in this semi-rural location.

The scheme was developed to comply with SCC brief that required 36 new self contained flats arranged in ‘pods’ of 9 flats each of which shares a small lounge and assisted bathing facilities. The remaining 2 flats are provided for respite care. In addition to the residential accommodation central communal facilities include lounge/dining areas that can be used by either the residents or by day care visitors.

One of the ‘pods’ is dedicated for the use of older people with mild to moderate dementia. This ‘pod’ includes a kitchenette and dining area in addition to the lounge to form an self-contained living unit.

Generously landscaped gardens provide a variety of amenity areas of differing character for the residents.
