Client: Kensington & Chelsea PCT

Princess Louise Care Home has won the award in the ‘New Building’ category of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Environment Award Scheme for 2005. The panel of judges commented that the new buildings... “fit well into their context while effectively fulfilling a community need. Through achieved on a limited budget the result is not mean nor ordinary, the use of bays is effective and the bold cills were also admired. The best entrant in the category, and thus given an Award”.

The building was designed to exacting NHS briefs drawn up by joint PCT and Mental Health Trust clients.

The Princess Louise home provides accommodation for 40 frail elderly people and 12 residents suffering from dementia and was built on part of the Princess Louise Hospital site in North Kensington. The external appearance of the Princess Louise building, although clearly contemporary in design, fits comfortably into its predominantly Victorian area of North Kensington.

Internally bedrooms are configured in small clusters each cluster having access to sitting and dining rooms and other communal rooms on the same floor. All bedrooms have ensuite wc/shower rooms, ceiling mounted hoist rails and are designed to accommodate Kings Fund type beds. There is also a snoezelen and a spiritual room available to all residents. A main kitchen and ancillary staff areas occupy part of the ground floor.
