A modern development within the grounds of a historic convent; a state-of-the-art retirement village in an area renowned for its rare species of orchids and birds; 235 luxury apartments plus swimming pool and spa in a complex managed by Augustinian nuns. St Georges Retreat is a fascinating mix of contradictions, all of which add up to a very desirable place to retire.
The Sisters of the Order of St Augustine of the Mercy of Jesus have been providing care for the elderly and mentally infirm at St Georges Retreat for over 150 years. PRP was commissioned by them to design a new care facility plus retirement apartments for sale. The resulting development includes three 60-bed nursing homes and extensive health, social and leisure facilities clustered around the historic buildings and surrounded by 250 acres of farmland in the heart of the Sussex countryside.
The complex has been sensitively designed so as not to compromise the beauty of the setting, which includes woodland, a lake, a farm and a Site of Nature Conservation Importance, as well as the Order’s historic convent and chapel. The new homes, built in terraced blocks of flats defining a series of courtyards, incorporate traditional materials and detailing to reflect the rural location and local Sussex vernacular influences.
A range of high quality facilities are provided for residents including a swimming pool and spa centre, hairdressers, library and shops. A village square with café and restaurant forms the centrepiece of the development.
